Air quality in urban areas: Comparing objective and subjective indicators in European countries

Urban areas are major consumers of environmental resources and thus often place unsustainable demands on natural resources. As half the world’s population (55%) lives in urban areas, degradation produced by cities threatens health quality life a fair share population. For these reasons, progress towards sustainable development must be monitored measured through suitable indicators. With reference to assessment air as specific dimension existing studies have introduced various methodologies that mostly focus objective measures (typically, exposure outdoor pollutants) while neglecting based individual perceptions. Our goal is contribute filling this gap. To end, we explore relationship between subjective European countries. While indicator concentrations PM2.5, our reconstructed from perceptions collected Union Statistics Income Living Conditions (EU-SILC) sample survey. Finally, cluster analysis, classify countries into homogeneous groups values analysis reveals several differences country rankings according two one group countries, both approaches converge, leading more definitive conclusions. other mismatch indicators suggests either approach alone not able capture full picture environments.
